A TWO BEDROOM SPACIOUS AND LXURIOUS APARTMENT - THE RED HOUSE, THE ESPLANADE - One of if not the most iconic buildings in Scarborough, now familiar throughout the country since being used as "The Royal" in the television series of the same name. Built in 1905 and bought by Alfred Shuttleworth in 1906 as a private holiday home it is now converted into luxury apartments enabling others to enjoy the magnificence of both the property and the surroundings.
Alfred Shuttleworth was the son of Joseph Shuttleworth proprietor of Clayton & Shuttleworth Lincoln who built the first portable steam engines and threshing machines. Very successful, in 1916 the firm built planes including the famous Sopwith Camel.
Alfred Shuttleworth bought Red Court, at the corner of Esplanade and Holbeck Road, in 1906 as a holiday home. The house at the opposite side of Holbeck Road blocked his view of the sea. He bought the house, demolished it and made the site into a garden. In 1917 he gave the garden to the town. The corporation changed the name to Shuttleworth Gardens. In 1937/38 the miniature rock and water garden was laid out with plants, summerhouses, boathouse and bridge all to scale. Mr. Shuttleworth also presented Holbeck Clock Tower to the town to commemorate the coronation of King George V in 1911. Another of his gifts was the statue of Mercury in the Italian Gardens.
Viewing is needed to appreciate just how beautiful the building, the location, the apartment on offer are. The apartment looks out onto the South Bay, the view of the Bay was considered by the Victorians to be comparable to that of the Bay of Naples. The front façade of the property is surrounded by walled lawns to the front and side, prepare to admire the entrance hall and staircase to the first floor. The conversion of this listed Grade 2 building has been done with great sympathy to produce apartments that suit the needs of the modern day yet still retain period features including coving, friezes, fireplaces etc.
A door on the First Floor Landing leads to the rear inner garden and courtyard making this the only apartment with its own private entrance. The large Lounge/Diner is stunning, sea views from the windows, a feature fireplace, the Bay Window giving yet more sea views. The present owner has modernised the kitchen, previously a bedroom, within the last two years and it now has a range of modern wall and base units, integrated Smeg oven, space for appliances including a dishwasher plus table for occasional snacks, breakfast.
Both Bedrooms are large doubles, Bedroom One enjoys light from the three large sash windows overlooking the inner garden. This bedroom is en suite with the modern three piece suite including a corner shower. Bedroom Two has its own special appeal, particularly the sea views from the two large sash windows, an ornate fireplace adds to the charm, additionally there are fitted wardrobes and storage. The spacious Family Bathroom is newly fitted with another contemporary three piece suite which includes P shaped bath with shower over, the combi boiler which provides central heating to the period style radiators throughout is housed in this bathroom. In such a large apartment it is no surprise that there is a separate Utility room sited to the rear aspect, here there is plumbing for washing machine, dryer, also a wash hand basin with w.c. adjoining.
Turning to the exterior of the building, there is a large and private inner garden, the colonnaded loggia which runs along the side offers a space for quiet enjoyment, relaxation. A further bonus with this apartment is the large garage/workshop with bi folding wooden doors, internally there are both power and light, originally designated and used as a laundry this garage completes the list of attributes of this very desirable apartment.
The apartments are freehold, The Red House is registered as a company with in house management, the maintenance charge we understand was.... 2019/20 £1,500.......we are told 2020/2021 it is £3,000 as the whole of the exterior has been painted.
